and john kerry fought it out every day about the war. in 2008 we were at war, and barack obama and john mccain fought it out every day in that war. this week when the financial crisis was absolutely on fire, at that debate, they were talking about the wars. this year, president obama does bring it up, he does bring it up at most of his stump speeches, how he explains what he has done and planning on doing talking about the two wars. he doesn't have to say much more because he's speaking to an empty room. the romney campaign has no identifiable position on afghanistan. they have been unwilling and unable to hold up that side of debate and so regardless of what it means for the candidates as a country we are deprived of a national discussion about a war we are in. 70,000 american families having skin in the game right now. we have -- that's part of the reason i'm looking forward to the debates. some ways sort of a post-policy campaign. and you can't do that in a debate, at least unless the debate is really bad. >> this is -- this is billed as a domestic policy debate, but -- and there are so

this was an ad that used a clip of obama back in the '08 campaign talking about john mccain and what john mccain had to say about the economy, but in the context of that romney ad, it only presented the words as if they were coming right out of the president's mouth and that wasn't the case. i've tried to go back to the romney campaign and say was this the ad that you corrected or removed. they just haven't gotten back to me on that. but anderson, mii mean, the rean why this is so important and crucial to the romney campaign, this line of attack on welfare and on welfare reform, what they accuse the president of doing with welfare reform, it fits into a narrative that they've been trying to say about the president for weeks now and that is that the president encourages government dependency, that he would rather see people who are dependent on government than go back into the work force and you heard mitt romney talk about that in the interview today, that he wants to get more people back to work instead of being dependent on government, and so that is why you did not see him back away from

crime and justice correspondent joe johns. so, joe, let's break this down. since this is breaking news and you know how it can go with legal decisions, they can be looked at a whole lot of different ways. this particular case, this judge had to look at not the constitutionality of voter i.d.s, he had to look at specifically whether the people of pennsylvania all had equal access to get i.d.s and get to the polls in time. and he's reversed himself from his earlier decision. where does this leave us? >> well, big picture. okay, ashleigh, it's a victory for opponents of the voter i.d. law in pennsylvania but only for this election. what the judge in pennsylvania said is that for this election only, he is blocking this controversial voter i.d. law in pennsylvania. remember, there are a lot of other states that have voter i.d. laws. the reason the judge is doing that in that state is there's not enough time, he says, between now and november to get protections in place to assure that people who want to vote don't lose their ability to vote. so the state right now is cut off from implementin

, president bush was leading democratic challenger john kerry by 11 percentage points just fryer to the first presidential debate. right after the debate, which just about everybody thought that kerry had won, president bush was leading by only two points. and you know, it really didn't change a whole lot until the end of the campaign. president bush won by three points. jenna: very interesting. we see senator kerry on the screen. a lot of things we talk about, larry, is turnout when it comes to this election and how important turnout really is going to be. do debates affect turnout? >> absolutely because the turnout battle is really a battle of enthusiasm in the two party bases and, you know the romney people have been pretty frank. paul ryan was very frank over the weekend in saying the ticket has had a tough couple weeks. when you have a tough couple weeks you're enthusiasm level can decline. a good performance in a presidential debate can gin party enthusiasm. that may happen on wednesday for either side. we'll have to see what transpires in the debate. jenna: we always have to wait to ac
